Sunrise Malawi 2007 The Malawi Expedition now has its own Web Site where the latest information about the expedition can be viewed We have launched an initiative to take UK Scouts to Malawi in July/August 2007. The programme will be designed to run in parallel with the World Jamboree and takes its title from the proposed Sunrise Ceremony. It is our intent to have two teams; one North and one South leave the country at different times. Both teams would spend about one week together in Malawi. The geographical split recognises school holiday requirements but will also enable prospective participants to choose the dates that best suit their specific requirements. Each trip will last five weeks. The second team will leave from the opening ceremony at the World Jamboree, the first will return to the closing ceremony. The expedition team will be structured in the following way. The whole expedition will have a director, this position will be supported by a deputy, one North the other South. The deputy directors will have responsibility of overseeing their respective expedition teams and offer support and mentoring where this is required. In addition there will be a team of assistant directors cover such issues as Funding, Training, Communications and logistics. There will also be a requirement for a Secretary and Treasurer. Around 25 participants, twenty between the ages of 16 and 20, at time of expedition (the expeditioners) and five leaders will make up the teams. It is hoped that the leaders will be young but it is felt that at this stage no age restriction should be applied. During the balance of 2005 the teams will be recruited and the training programme started. The first meeting is planed at Loughborough on the 22 October. Both the North and South teams will plan and execute their own training programme but the teams will come together for, at least, four training sessions before leaving for Malawi.
Cost for the expedition is still to be confirmed but should be around £1500 to £2000 per person. This amount will also cover cost of work undertaken in Malawi. Each individual will be targeted to raise this amount. Any major financial contribution will be divided equally among the participants unless specifically identified as a donation for one or a group of expeditioners. The use of any surplus is to be determined.
Proposed; George Devine Chair UK-Africa Scout Fellowship Concurred; David Bull International Commissioner The Scout Association.
